What are speech therapies?

Speech Therapy is a health profession that falls under the area of Human Communication Sciences. Speech therapy, is the diagnosis, management and treatment of individuals who are unable to communicate effectively or who have difficulty with feeding and swallowing. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, and oral/ feeding/ swallowing skills to identify types of communication problems (articulation, fluency, voice, receptive and expressive language disorders) and the best way to treat them.

Who needs speech therapy?

Screenings are abbreviated evaluations to determine if a child could benefit from further evaluation or if a child’s level of performance is age appropriate and no further evaluation is needed. If your child is found to have mild difficulties yet a full evaluation is not recommended, home programming ideas will be discussed so parents can facilitate these skills at home. If an area of concern is identified, a full evaluation will be recommended.

What do they do at speech therapy?

Parents are often invited into the treatment rooms to observe therapy if the situation is appropriate, and parent education is an integral part of every therapy session. Each session is designed to allow time for the parent and therapist to discuss progress and what was done during the therapy session. Home programs are provided to the parent to increase carryover in all settings and help the child be more successful in reaching their goals.

When is the therapy needed?

An evaluation allows a speech therapist the opportunity to assess your child’s development. This assessment may include a standardized test, observation through play, medical history information, and/or parent report. In most cases, it includes all four. Through the evaluation, it will be determined if treatment is necessary. Treatment at Kid’s Creek Therapy cannot be initiated unless an evaluation has been completed.

J. Todd Baker, PhD., LPC-S, BCN
President / Founder

Dr. Baker’s approach to therapy is driven by the power of relationship. A healthy therapeutic relationship provides a safe space to encourage, challenge, and support the client through whatever the situation or circumstance. This same concept is found in the Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization curriculum, which is focused more on building the necessary relationship to allow the client to process feelings and emotions in a safe and supportive environment.

Although a healthy therapeutic relationship is the key to motivate change, there are specific techniques that are. used that can significantly help clients process their feelings while also engaging their logical brain. To engage the logic brain means they can learn, apply, and practice these techniques by choice rather than at the whim of emotion.

“I believe the therapeutic process is less about technique and more about relationship. When there is a healthy and appropriate therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client there is a great motivation for change.”

Paul Wright, MD, MPH
Medical Director

Dr. Wright’s unique approach to helping patients is refreshing, rooted in science, compassionate, comprehensive and hopeful. Some might also even describe it as refreshingly old-fashioned.

How can something be leading-edge and old-fashioned at the same time? Great question. Leading-edge approaches, old-fashioned care. The way Dr. Wright cares for his patients feels like the kind of care you might have received decades ago when house calls were common. Where your doctor looked you in the eye, taking the time and asking the questions required to dig deeply into the issue at hand.

A holistic approach to mental health factors in lifestyle, environment, sleep habits, diet and exercise as much as it considers experiences, trauma, diagnoses and symptoms of mental illness. This more in-depth, holistic approach to looking at the whole person takes time. Investment. Attention. Three things Dr. Wright is committed to giving each patient he works with.

“I won’t sit behind a computer screen taking notes during your session. I prefer to be fully engaged, jotting down notes by hand if needed. I would describe my sessions as relaxed, comfortable, unrushed, and purposeful.”

Chelsea Bates, MEd, MBA, LPC
Executive Director

Chelsea Bates, LPC serves as the Executive Director of Logos Horizon Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs (IOP/PHP), where she leads with the belief that meaningful growth occurs when individuals feel truly seen, supported, and understood. Her leadership philosophy is rooted in compassion, collaboration, and the conviction that people have the capacity to heal, grow, and rewrite their stories when given the right environment and support.

With extensive clinical and programmatic experience, Chelsea has worked with adolescents, young adults, and families navigating life transitions, identity development, emotional regulation, relationships, and complex mental health challenges. As Executive Director, she oversees clinical operations, program development, and interdisciplinary teams, ensuring that care remains evidence-based, ethically grounded, and deeply person-centered.

Chelsea is known for fostering therapeutic programs that feel relational rather than rigid—where treatment is structured, but humanity is never lost. Logos Horizon’s IOP and PHP models reflect her commitment to balancing clinical excellence with authenticity, creating spaces where clients feel empowered rather than overwhelmed. Her approach integrates best practices with genuine connection, recognizing that healing can be challenging without needing to feel heavy or impersonal.

Beyond organizational leadership, Chelsea remains actively engaged in community advocacy, youth mentorship, and the development of innovative programs that promote resilience, self-efficacy, and long-term wellness. As a mother, she draws daily inspiration from her son, reinforcing her dedication to building systems of care that support not only individuals, but families and future generations.

Chelsea’s vision for Logos Horizon is clear: to provide high-quality, accessible, and compassionate treatment that meets clients exactly where they are—while guiding them forward with dignity, hope, and confidence.
